After a four-year pause, founder Zal Made Olivares relaunches her small-batch botanical line rooted in Puerto Rican and Dominican plant traditions, with three signature products and a simple idea: maybe our skin doesn’t need more.
More than 13 years ago, Zal Made was searching for one answer: why she couldn’t become a mother. The deeper she looked, the more the question changed. What started as a fertility journey turned into a full rethinking of beauty, wellness and how women are taught to relate to their bodies. That search became the seed of Wise Roots Living.

From a question to a company
Today, Zal is a mother, certified menstrual therapist, botanical formulator and founder. Her Puerto Rican and Dominican roots shape how she understands plants, femininity, healing and beauty.
Wise Roots wasn’t built around more steps, more products or more promises. It was built around a different idea, one Zal puts plainly: beauty is not something women need to earn, fix or layer on. It is something we return to.
For her, the brand is more than a skincare company. It is the physical expression of everything that journey taught her.
Beauty without the excess
The beauty industry has taught women to correct, conceal, exfoliate, layer and keep adding something new. Wise Roots asks women to come back to relationship instead: with their skin, with the ingredients they choose, with their bodies, and with the rituals that remind them who they are.
Zal makes small-batch botanical formulas from plant oils, herbs, roots, clays and recognizable ingredients. Her philosophy isn’t a rejection of modern beauty. It’s about questioning excess, creating with intention and restoring trust in the body.
A ritual. A prayer. A blessing.
Three signature creations carry that philosophy into a simple routine.
- Diosa Rituals is a botanical cleansing ritual built around purification, without turning skincare into punishment.
- Canela Prayers is a powdered botanical mask of clays, roots, herbs and spices. It’s activated only when the woman using it decides to create the ritual.
- Bruja Blessings is a concentrated face serum of nutrient-dense plant and seed oils, made to nourish, protect and illuminate the skin. It turns the final step of the ritual into an act of anointing.
The pause became part of the becoming
Wise Roots is back after a four-year pause, a stretch that took Zal through divorce, motherhood, moving between countries and her own evolution. The brand returns with the same intention and a stronger voice.
“Your skin is a living altar.”
At its heart is the same belief: “Cuando la piel se encuentra con la intención, la belleza se vuelve medicina.” Zal is clear that this isn’t a medical claim. It’s a philosophy of beauty as reconnection, reverence and self-knowledge.
The conversations behind the brand
Zal’s story opens into a larger conversation about what becomes possible when women reconnect with the parts of themselves they were taught to ignore.
- The womb, creativity and the cycle. Reconnecting with the womb widened her fertility journey into a conversation about intuition, creativity and self-knowledge. She explores how the first rejection of the feminine can start at menarche, when menstruation is framed as something to hide, control or endure.
- Feminine power, motherhood and birth. Her vision of power doesn’t require women to become harder to become stronger. She speaks to softness, receptivity, instinct and birth itself as expressions of power, intelligence and agency.
- Beauty as reconnection. The skin doesn’t have to be hated before it can be cared for. Fewer products, intentional formulas, botanical ingredients and ritual become a way back into relationship with the body.
- Roots and cultural memory. Her Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage shaped her relationship with plants long before she became a formulator, through herbs, oils and remedies passed down by generations of Caribbean women.
- Dharma and the courage to create. Zal believes the world grows more expansive when people stop choosing their lives only around status, security or expectation and start sharing the gifts they’re uniquely here to bring.
Where to find Wise Roots
In the end, Wise Roots is an expression of Zal’s path: from infertility to the body, from the body to the cycle, from the cycle to creation, and from creation back to self. Or, as the brand puts it: what we remember in ourselves, we give back to the world.
